I only know that young papaya can be used to make 'asam rebus' after I got married to my husband. My mother-in-law always cook this healthy simple dish everytime we 'balik kampung' to visit her. This is my hubby's favourite dish. It is simple yet delicious.
1 small young papaya, remove skin, and slice thickly.
1/4 cup dried anchovies (ikan bilis)
1 lemon grass, crush
3 red chillies, 3 small hot pepper, 4 small onion.
1/2 tsp 'belacan' granules (shrimp paste)
Mix all ingredients in a small pot, add water to cover the papaya. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and continue boiling for 5 minutes. Add a piece of 'asam keping' and some sweet basil leaves (daun kesum) or turmeric leaves. Season with salt and seasoning or sugar. Serve hot with fried fish and 'sambal belacan'. Hmm.......yummy!!!
